Arrive Without Leaving
Actually, virtual holidays are well established. Holidays from Home is a social enterprise run by volunteers, operated from Norwich. They aim to increase access to the world by people who are unable to experience it first hand, due to illness, disability, age, financial or environmental reasons.
They say; ‘Arrive without leaving, create virtual experiences without leaving home’. Clare Wade explained that she was bedbound for six years with ME/CFS and was upset that she couldn’t have a holiday. The anger and frustration from that lack drove her to create the concept of bringing a place to life in an experience ‘which can take you away from the boredom of daily life to discover something new and exciting’.
By this process you can look at brochures and TV ads and dream of beaches, cities, skylines and make them all ‘happen’. It’s good for those who are afraid of flying, heights, insects, different foods, open spaces… anything really.
You customise the sights, sounds and images of your sightseeing, museums, shopping, sea and sand, nightlife, culture and foods. Guidebooks are provided and you can see it all without stress of travel delays, airports, luggage and high prices and all the hell that is a contemporary holiday.

Great Wall of China (China)
Built between the 5th century B.C. and the 16th century, the Great Wall of China is a stone-and-earth fortification created to protect the borders of the Chinese Empire from invading Mongols. The Great Wall is actually a succession of multiple walls spanning approximately 4,000 miles, making it the world's longest manmade structure

Petra (Jordan)
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1985, Petra was the capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV, and likely existed in its prime from 9 B.C. to A.D. 40. The members of this civilization proved to be early experts in manipulating water technology, constructing intricate tunnels and water chambers, which helped create a pseudo-oasis. A number of incredible structures carved into stone, a 4,000-seat amphitheatre and the El-Deir monastery have also helped the site earn its fame.

The Great Mouse Plot (to be continued….)


You have already read “The Great Mouse Plot”. Do you know what happened next?
 Were the kids punished? Did they confess their “crime”? Did Mrs Pratchett take revenge?

Here is a paragraph of the second chapter. Read it and take notes to tell the class the rest of the story. Tell it in first person as if it happened to you.

DO NOT write down a script for this. Just have notes with the important data. You need to be ready to speak for about 30-60 seconds but you can't read what you say!

The flush of triumph over the dead mouse was carried forward to the next morning as we all met again to walk to school.
 ‘Let’s go in and see if it’s still in the jar,’ somebody said as we approached the sweet-shop.
‘Don’t,’ Thwaites said firmly. ‘It’s too dangerous. Walk past as though nothing has happened.’
As we came level with the shop we saw a cardboard notice hanging on the door.

We stopped and stared. We had never known the sweetshop to be closed at this time in the morning, even on Sundays.
 ‘What’s happened?’ we asked each other. ‘What’s going on?’
We pressed our faces against the window and looked inside. Mrs Pratchett was nowhere to be seen.
‘Look!’ I cried. ‘The Gobstopper jar’s gone! It’s not on the shelf! There’s a gap where it used to be!’
‘It’s on the floor!’ someone said. ‘It’s smashed to bits and there’s Gobstoppers everywhere!’
‘There’s the mouse!’ someone else shouted ……….

I saw a film called Mamma Mia recently.
It is a musical and the setting is a beautiful Greek island. The film is fantastic, and the story is interesting for everyone. The actors are excellent and the songs in the film are great. Some of the singing is terrible but it is not a problem.

The story is great fun. At the beginning of the film, a pretty young girl called Sophie plans to get married. She has got a mother called Donna but she doesn’t know her father. Sophie wants to find her father. She looks in her mother’s diary and invites three men (called Sam, Bill and Harry) to the wedding. Donna is happy to meet the three men again but she doesn’t know who Sophie’s father is. At the end of the film Donna falls in love with Sam again. They get married.

It is a good film and I really recommend it.
